A Visit to Eric Stonestreet

The New York Times paid Eric Stonestreet a visit where "Modern Family" is filming an episode.  Here are the highlights of the visit:

TRAILER PARKED

Stonestreet's call time was 10:45 a.m., a vast improvement over his usual 6 or 7 a.m. He says the show typically shoots two to seven scenes in a day; today they'll shoot five. He's also relieved to be taping on the Fox lot in Century City in Los Angeles, the show's home base. "Locations are the worst," he says. "Last week we shot at LAX for three days."

Though the morning began with a scene involving several cast members, all have been dismissed except for Stonestreet and Ferguson, when the show breaks for lunch. Stonestreet shows off his trailer -- a typical setup, with "Cameron" written on the door. After showing off pictures of his dog, who sometimes joins him on set, Stonestreet reveals that he originally read the pilot for "Modern Family" when a friend asked for help running lines.

"He had an audition for Cameron, and as I read with him, I was really bummed I wasn't getting to go in for it," Stonestreet recalls. "It just hadn't come my direction as far as the physical type yet." Although he hadn't seen a description of the character's appearance, he knew that Ferguson was already cast as Mitchell and the network was looking for someone who matched him. "You just never know," Stonestreet says. "I've been a character actor and a big guy my whole career, and my goal has always been to change people's mind and do justice to the part so that they look past what I look like and see just an actor, rather than a 'big' or a 'heavyset' actor."

Stonestreet's representation persisted, and the show still couldn't find a Cameron. The search began to widen, and eventually Stonestreet was allowed to audition. "I don't remember the exact breakdown, but it was something like 'Passionate, the more dramatic of the two, flamboyant but grounded,'" the actor says. "It was a tricky character to audition for, because you read the script and there's that 'Lion King' moment. So you have to build a character who's not too flamboyant -- yet, on Page 27, he's capable of this."

Stonestreet knew it would be easy to go over the top with the interpretation, which he hoped to avoid. "There were three audition scenes, and the word on the street was a lot of actors went in and were dismissed after the first scene," he reveals. "So my goal was to be able to get through all three." Not only did he get to do all three; he got to do them several times, as he was called back for a screen test and a network test.

Over the course of 10 minutes, four people have popped in to speak to Stonestreet, show him costume changes, or ask questions. A fifth person now appears, telling him he's needed in hair and makeup. As he prepares to depart, he notes, "My getting this part is a great lesson in that you can't guess what people want in a room while you're auditioning. You have to be who you are and true to yourself and what naturally fits you. If they're buying what you're selling, you get the job. I think of auditions as there's a problem that I'm going to solve, and if I get the part, I feel like the problem's been solved. If I don't get the part, then they still have the problem."

THE BIG TEASE
In the makeup trailer, a stylist blow-dries his hair to achieve Cameron's fluffy mane, as the actor reveals how acting thwarted his planned career as a prison warden. "I've always been fascinated by crime and punishment," Stonestreet explains. "Someday I hope to get to be in an organized crime movie."

Born and raised in Kansas City, Kan., Stonestreet earned a track and field scholarship to a junior college. While there, he took a fall, tearing his rotator cuff, breaking his foot, and putting an end to his sports career. He then transferred to Kansas State University.

Though he had studied clowning as a kid (a talent he would later put to use when Cameron reveals his secret past as Fizbo the Clown), Stonestreet had never considered acting as a career, intending instead to become a prison warden. After breaking up with a girlfriend and moping around school, he was challenged by a friend to "change things up" by auditioning for a play. Stonestreet landed the role of Uncle Fred ("the smallest role in the play") in "Prelude to a Kiss" and was instantly hooked. "I just caught the bug," he says. "It was exhilarating."

He moved to Chicago, feeling it was "a safer place to fail than Los Angeles." He studied at Second City and began booking commercials fairly quickly. "You can carve out a good career in Chicago with voiceover and theaters like the Goodman and Steppenwolf," he notes. "Originally I had no intention of moving to Los Angeles. About a year in, I realized I needed to give the big sandbox a try."

Guest parts began coming fairly regularly, from "Malcolm in the Middle" to "ER" and a recurring role on "CSI." Stonestreet learned early on to do his job and stay out of the way. "I remember Gene Hackman saying, 'Your job in that position is to know your lines, hit your mark, be on time, and not screw anything up,'" he recalls. "I think some actors, we feel like we have to impress the producer and make a moment for our character. But the best thing you can do is just be a pro. That is way more appreciated and respected than trying to become the star of a moment."

At this point, Ferguson enters the trailer and notices that his co-star has a guest. "Are you doing an interview?" he asks. "I'm sorry, it's not going to be very good." He then begins mimicking Stonestreet: "It was sooo liberating to go to class and really study." Stonestreet is unfazed, saying, "This is what Jesse does: He makes fun of me."

SPIDER MEN

A few minutes later, the pair is on set, preparing to tape a scene in which Cameron and Mitchell hear a suspicious noise on Lily's baby monitor. Cameron races into the room wielding a baseball bat, followed shortly by Mitchell. They're relieved to realize the monitor was just picking up noise from a neighbor. "But if that had been a spider," Cameron quips, "he would have been in trouble."

The first two takes go smoothly. On the third, Stonestreet draws out the word "trouble," teasing Mitchell. This elicits a laugh from director Kevin Rodney Sullivan, who pops into the room to ask him to do it again on the next take. On the fourth take, Stonestreet draws the word into three syllables: "Tru-huh-ble!" Co-creator Steven Levitan then suggests that Stonestreet raise the bat toward Ferguson when his partner enters the room, as if thinking he's the intruder. The bit goes over well, and Levitan says to keep it. At least three times the director calls for "one more" take before finally stopping at nine.

A little more than an hour has been spent taping a scene that will probably last 20 seconds on screen. "That's pretty standard," Stonestreet says. "And what's so cool about our show -- which was just demonstrated -- is how even when we're shooting it, we're constantly finding new things and evolving it as we go."

DOMESTIC BLISS

Stonestreet returns to the makeup trailer to have his hair done yet again, for a scene he'll be shooting with one of the babies who double as Lily. While there, he recounts how he and Ferguson decided to meet for coffee after learning that Stonestreet had won the role: "I was talking to my dad on the phone, and he said, 'What are you going to do today?' I said, 'Oh, I'm going to meet my husband for coffee.'" It was only midway through the meeting that the two realized they were surrounded by couples -- and had scheduled their meet on Valentine's Day.

Though Stonestreet is straight, he had no qualms about accepting the role, and he takes it as a compliment that many viewers find him so convincing that they assume he's gay in real life. "I love it!" he says. "I love the fans that I have. They're so cool. I'm a guy who's been working as an actor for a long time, and my main goal was always to get a job. Not to get a job on a great show, not to get a job on a great show with a great character, but just to get a job. So for me to be on this show with this cast and this audience support is more than I could have ever imagined. I will take my fans in any shape, size, gender, sexual orientation they come in. I'm just happy to have fans!"

As for his family's reaction, Stonestreet points to the year before he landed "Modern Family," when he played murderers on "The Mentalist," "Pushing Daisies," and "NCIS," as well as an inmate on death row for raping and murdering a girl on a recent episode of "Nip/Tuck." "People will ask me, 'Are your parents okay with you playing a gay character on TV?' And I'm like, 'My mom was more upset that I killed three people on TV last year!'"

Stonestreet shoots his final scene with Lily and wraps his day just before 6 p.m., about an hour later than expected but unusually early for an actor on a weekly series. Though he admits he got restless waiting for his big break when he first moved to L.A., he now feels grateful for the time it took to build experience in front of the camera.

"Eleven years ago, I thought I was ready to be on a sitcom," he says. "Looking back on it, I may have been ready, but there are so many aspects that go into it that I didn't know. Just the technical end of it: 'Yeah, you're going to be funny, but we need you to be funny on this mark, leaning with your weight on the right, and don't get lost behind the doorway. Also, right off-camera, there's a huge light in your face.' There are so many things to work around, you're not even aware."

He also laughs to think just how different his career turned out than he intended. He recalls once reading a pamphlet about what a person can expect in a career in criminal justice. "If your career went the way it was supposed to, by 35 you should have your first junior wardenship," he says. "I always think about the Eric who's living that life out there, who's a junior warden in Terre Haute, Ind. And I'm really glad I got detoured."

Modern Family - "Benched" Sneak Peeks

Watch these videos from TV Overmind and tell me if Justin Kirk is hot or not?  I think he is and he oozes with self-confidence wearing that body-hugging surfing suit.  Cameron's intro, that Mitchell and he are gays, was very funny and brave.  Meanwhile, Phil and Jay get into a who's-a-better-coach dilemma.  Naturally, son-in-law and father-in-law issues result to Phil landing on an assistant coach position.  This all happens when the bad coach was not in sight.  I can't wait for comedy Wednesday!  In the meantime, see this video now!

Modern Family - "Game Changer" Promotional Pics

Below are the photos of the episode "Game Changer" on "Modern Family" which airs tonight on ABC.  Thanks to TV Overmind for these pics which tell a lot on what's gonna happen with our favorite characters in the show.  Jay plays opposite Manny and Gloria in the game of chess.  Any guess on who will win the game?  In the last picture, Mitchell has his own way of toughening up.  I'm so excited to see how he does it and what happens next.  I could only see him as a peace-loving and violence-free kind of individual so the picture is really funny for me.  I wonder what Claire's gift to Phil would be.  Any guesses?  Sound-off below.

Modern Family - "Game Changer" Preview

ABC's "Modern Family" invites us all to Phil's birthday celebration.  And don't forget your gift!  The only gift you can give according to Claire is the hottest new product that launches on the day of Phil's birthday.  I'm sure we will enjoy another blast from the Pritchetts, as you will see in this promo of tomorrow night's episode.  Gloria doesn't seem to be happy with how the game turned out.  Here is the video from Primetvpromos.

Ty Burrell Becomes a Real Dad

Ty Burrell and wife Holly recently adopted a little girl.  Will Ty Burrell become Phil of Modern Family?  Maybe, an even better dad than Phil.  Cheers!  Congratulations to the Burrells for this milestone in their life.  Here is what Ty said to Kristin Dos Santos when asked about parenting:

"I apologize for half of it. But I will actually take a little bit of pride in how much Phil cares. He really is putting in the time, and he really cares about his kids even though he gets very few things right. I do love how much he tries, you know what I mean? If my wife and I ever have kids, I hope I can try as hard as Phil. Maybe not quite as hard as Phil, but I hope I can try."

And now, the money quote/epiphany: "I guess if Phil can raise kids, so can I!"

Less than two weeks later and whammo! He has adopted a baby. Coincidence?

Of course. And I'm only kidding. But (bad) jokes aside, it's clear Ty had babies on the brain when I
talked to him two weeks ago at the Paley Festival's Modern Family event, and seems well prepared to be an even better dad than ultracool Phil Dunphy.

See what else Ty says about Phil and parenting in the video clip above.

As for the show's biggest diva, Ty says she, too, comes in a tiny package.

"Let's be honest," Ty deadpans. "Lily is not a team player. Nothing but finger sandwiches and Evian. Just a little bit of dialogue would be so nice [to make her do]. But no, she's like, let them do the work. Smoking her very long cigarettes."

One thing's certain: Ty's newly adopted little girl has one very funny dad. And he might want to keep her away from Lily.

Spoilers from Jesse Tyler Ferguson

On Pop Wrap at the New York Post, Jesse Tyler Ferguson talked about some spoilers for the next episodes, including the Hawaii vacation and the possibility of Gabourey Sidibe guesting on "Modern Family".  He also spoke of Lily and Eric Stonestreet and their relationship with each other.  He says that a lot of things and new ideas can go on in the next episodes to come.  I say that the story line is amazing and the creators have done a great job in making this comedy a hit, not to mention the superb actors that implemented the ideas that are pouring in the show.  One of these actors that have been great in the lime light is Jesse, and here is what happened during the interview:

PopWrap: In tonight's episode, what's this I hear of Lily saying her first word -- and that it turns out to be 'mamma?'

Jesse Tyler Ferguson:
[laughs] Yes, and in the grand tradition of "Modern Family," she says it in the arms of an Asian woman.

PW: Mitchell and Cameron's pediatrician, right?

Jesse:
Exactly. Suzy Nakamura plays the Dr. Miura and she's hilarious. They actually pitched the storyline after her first appearance [in episode 6], so they've had this in the pipeline for a long time.

PW: So Lily's first word is 'mamma.' What was yours?

Jesse:
I don't know! Let's get my mom on a conference call! I mean, I can speculate -- it was probably in the form of a song, something like, "Swaneeeeeee!"

PW: Now that you've been playing this role for almost a full season, what do you like best about playing one half of this couple?

Jesse:
I think they could have cast these roles a million different ways, and they chose to go a little more middle of the road as far as how Eric and I look. We aren't what you typically see on TV representing gay men -- look, I go to a gym in West Hollywood, I certainly feel out of place there. But we represent a large quantity of gay men so it's refreshing to portray the gay man that I am in real life on TV.

PW: Sometimes it seems like Mitchell and Eric are more like roommates than partners. Have you noticed that?

Jesse:
A lot of people don't think we show enough affection to each other. But I feel like they're struggling to be new dads, so this shows how a relationship can suffer when you have to redefine your priorities. I don't think it has anything to do with ABC being nervous about "showing the gays being intimate," but Eric and I have been pushing the writers to remind the audience that we are a couple in a loving relationship, so we try to inject intimacy into our scenes, whether it's with a touch of the hand or a pack on the cheek.

PW: Do you think Cam and Mitchell might adopt more kids in the future?

Jesse:
It's definitely something we talk about. We love the idea of adopting a teenager -- what would that be like? I love the idea, but wouldn't want to see it happen for a couple more years. I really like growing up with Lily right now and I don't think me, Jesse, is ready for a new kid any more than Mitchell is.

PW: It was revealed last week that the cast is headed to Hawaii to film the season finale. What can you tell us about that?

Jesse:
We're actually not sure if it's going to be the season finale, it might end up being another episode. But it came about because we shot this episode where we're all stuck in the airport -- where everything that can go wrong does go wrong -- on the way to a family vacation. And it was just going to be that episode, but we realized that we were missing the fun of seeing this family travel together. Especially with Cam and Mitchell being new parents, we didn't want to miss seeing them travel with a baby for the first time. So the writers decided to do it. We leave on Sunday.

PW: Pretty amazing, typically shows save the Hawaiian vacation for when they're actually in trouble, ratings-wise!

Jesse:
I think people might think we're trying to do too much in the first season, but we've only begun to scratch the surface of this family when you think about it.

PW: Especially if you keep bringing in more family members, like Shelley Long as your mom and Fred Willard as Phil's dad!

Jesse:
And Fred will be back -- I want people to know that because the Internet was filled with all these angry rants about us wasting Fred the first time [he was only briefly in one episode]. It was like, "calm down people, we're just introducing him to bring him back!"

PW: Which of the other guest stars do you think we might see again?

Jesse:
I'm dying for more Shelley Long. I think that relationship needs to be explored more. I'd also like to see Elizabeth Banks back. She is our best friend afterall, I don't think we'd just drop her. She'll definitely be back at some point.

PW: Are there any actors you'd like to have on the show?

Jesse:
The one person I actually have gone after -- because she'd be so brilliant -- is Gabourey Sidibe. I think she would be fantastic as a nanny we hire. She's just so bubbly and sweet and a fan of the show. I think this would be a seamless fit for her.

PW: I think we're also hoping for some more old school ice dancing routines from Mitchell and Claire!

Jesse:
I'm so glad people love that, because it was probably my favorite episode to date and so much fun to do with Julie [Bowen]. I don't know that we'll see any more ice dancing, but there's more that will definitely be drudged up from their past life as siblings.

PW: It's funny, you never forget that these three families are related, but sometimes you forget that they have such elaborate histories together.

Jesse:
That's the genius of the show's concept -- we're just scratching the surface. There are so many relationships to be explored -- whether it's Mitchell and his father, who hasn't totally accept having a gay son yet , or Cam & Gloria, who are like the outsiders that married in to this crazy world, there's all these great bonds between the characters. I knew this show had a lot of potential to be really special and have legs to run for years without getting stale, but when you step back, it's crazy to see how little we've actually explored in the first 24 episodes.

PW: What are you really excited for fans to see in the last half of the season?

Jesse:
I just shot a scene yesterday where Mitchell, who's afraid of birds, gets stuck in the house with a loose pigeon. It'll probably end up just being a one-minute long scene, but it was so much fun to shoot -- I'm excited to see how all the physical comedy comes off. I'm also anxious to see a scene where I end up in an article of clothing that's going to surprise a lot of people. One that I had a little too much fun wearing in real life [laughs].

PW: Earlier you mentioned fan outrage over Fred Willard and we follow you on Twitter, is it fun being able to connect with fans like that?

Jesse:
It is. I kinda didn't get the point of Twitter at first, but it's fun. And also dangerous because people can misconstrue something you say in those 140 characters. The other day I sarcastically said to Carrie Ann Inaba, "I can't believe I am going to be on DWTS! I'm so excited!!!" And immediately stories were being picked up that I was part of the cast. Sarcasm doesn't come over well on Twitter. So it can be dangerous and you certainly shouldn't Twitter after a few drinks. Drunk Twittering is the new drunk dialing!

PW: So, which celeb are you betting on for this season?

Jesse: Well, you know I love my Evan [Lysacek]. I've never even met the guy, I just think he's swell. I have personal reasons for liking him [laughs]. I have to say, I know that Kate [Gosselin] is getting a lot of heat, but I'm very anxious to see her dancing. And my very good friend Niecy Nash is in the cast and I had no idea! She totally kept that a surprise from me, so she's my favorite to win.

PW: And now that you share a network, I bet ABC can totally hook you up with Evan!

Jesse: Oh, I know -- there are so many ins right now!

"Modern Family" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC

Spoiler Alert: Modern Family's Aloha Trip

Major spoiler here at Modern Family TV Series.  The Hawaii trip was the topic during the 2010 PaleyFest held recently.  You will never imagine what the cast has revealed regarding their summer vacation.  I think that this will be super fun and it will really mark the legend that is, "Modern Family".  Here it is from William Keck at TV Guide Magazine:

At the annual PaleyFest’s Modern Family panel, the cast of ABC’s comedy hit talked up their upcoming Hawaii episode, which finds the Dunphy and Pritchett families getting their Aloha on. Here’s what to expect from the very special episode.

“We’re celebrating Jay’s birthday,” says Ed O’Neill, who plays Grandpa Jay. “So everybody goes.”

The trouble starts with a phone call from Jay’s brother, whom Ed says, “points out that I’m the same age our dad was when hedropped dead. With that news, I start to go to the spa more and start to overdue it trying to get in shape.”

When Jay fails to show for the big birthday dinner luau, concerned son-in-law Phil goes looking for him and finds grandpa in a hammock, felled by a sore back. “I can’t get out so he tries to help me out,” says Ed. “Then he falls in, it flips and we end up upside down together.” (Sounds almost like the Moon Landing Jay experienced in the gym locker room with Cam.)

“I can’t wait for that!,” explains Ty Burrell (Phil), who amazingly has never been to Hawaii and is looking forward to consuming massive quantities of seafood. “I have been loving the physical stuff and I love working with Ed. But we’ll both have to brush our teeth before that scene.”

Meanwhile, gay dads Cameron and Mitchell will be exploring Maui’s lavender farm. “I’m trying to pull Cameron away from the pool to come with me to this farm,” says Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays Mitchell. “And we might have a similar situation to where we locked baby Lily in the car.” This time: she’ll likely be left in an elevator!

Julie Bowen, who may also use her time there to turn up on Lost as Jack’s estranged wife Sarah, just hopes the vacation episode doesn’t come off looking too ‘Very Brady’.

“We find a tiki tiki,” Julie kids of the episode, which will be shot on the grounds of Maui’s Four Seasons.
