"Modern Family" Star Sarah Hyland Talks About Her "Disney Hair"

PopEater chatted with the 19-year-old actress Sarah Hyland who plays Haley in the comedy series "Modern Family". She talked about her hair in the show, how she admires Julie Bowen, and what's coming up in the rest of the season.

What's the best part about working on 'Modern Family'?
I think it has to be the people. Julie [Bowen] and Ty [Burell] and everyone on the show are so funny and they are so nice. It's one big party all the time. It's like a circus.

Do you have a favorite episode?
I think my favorite episode would be the episode where Julie ... is in her underwear because she's really hot.

What can we expect from the rest of the season?
A lot of laughs, a lot of lessons learned.

You filmed in Hawaii, right?
Yeah, we were filming in Hawaii.

That must have been fun.
It was beautiful. It was amazing. I couldn't believe my eyes. I started crying when I went out on my balcony. I was like, "This is so cheesy that I'm crying but I love it, it's so beautiful."

You're 19 now and you've been working since you were young. What has it been like transitioning from a child actor to an adult?
I haven't really noticed a difference because I've just been working. I understand the whole concept ... but I haven't really noticed a difference at all because if you keep working and nothing stops, it's all the same.

Is there anyone you're dying to work with?

Gabourey Sidibe. We really clicked at the Golden Globes. We e-mail each other now. I think it would be so much fun to work with her. She's hysterical. She's an amazing actress.

I see from your Twitter account that you're a Lakers fan. Are you looking forward to the playoffs?
I am really looking forward to it.

Unfortunately, I'm a Cavaliers fan, hopefully we'll see you there.
Oh, we will see you there. And we will conquer.

That's probably true. Besides basketball, what else are you watching on TV?
When football season is on, I love watching football. I'm a Cowboys fan. I love watching 'Community' and 'Southland.' I've been watching 'Lost' since the pilot aired. Although I'm not caught up with 'Lost,' because, until this season, I was watching it every Wednesday, and now it's on Tuesday for some reason. Oh, because we're on, never mind. That just hit me. I was like, "Why is it on Wednesdays? What's on in its time slot? Oh, we are!"

One last question -- your hair is amazing on the show, we're all jealous. How do you get it to look like that?
I call that "Disney hair." They just curl it and then you put your fingers through it ... It looks like everyone on Disney.

"Modern Family" Kids in Commercials

The child actors of "Modern Family" Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, and Nolan Gould, are featured in some commercials. This is good for the Dunphy's.

Sarah Hyland, who plays Haley is in an Olive Garden commercial. Watch it now!

Meanwhile Ariel Winter, who plays Alex, is in a Nintendo DS cooking game. Imagine that?

Finally, Nolan Gould, who you know as dim-witted Luke, unfortunately his commercial isn't online. But I'll get it here once it's available.

Ariel Winter Shares Her Thoughts on Alloy

I found an article about Alloy's interview with Ariel Winter o r Alex of "Modern Family".  She talks about how similar she is and the character she's portraying in the show.  She also shares with us how she handles herself at times when she's in a very funny scene and feels like bursting into laughter.  She's adorable, not to mention very talented and vibrant.  Here are the highlights of the interview:

How are you like and unlike your character, Alex?
Coincidentally, Alex and I are both loyal and smart (not really tooting my own horn), cynical and funny and I have to admit, I'm a bit of a smart alec myself, if you ask my parents. We both really value education. The biggest difference is how we dress. Alex is more Urban Outfitters tomboy and I'm more of an edgy rock and roll younger version of Taylor Swift. Also, I don't wear glasses or play cello.

How did your own family life help you prepare for Modern Family?
My family is somewhat like my TV family. My parents are hilarious and are opposites, exactly like Phil and Claire. My mom is like, "We're on a schedule! We have to get things done." And my dad is like, "Hey, we can relax."

Do you think of any of your cast mates as family now?
Ed O'Neill is definitely like a grandfather to me. He's really sweet. And Nolan is a lot like a little brother to me.

Do you have any brothers and sisters?
I have a brother and sister. They're a lot older than me so everyone always asks, "Same mother and father?"

Do you hang out with your brother and sisters on the show when you're not filming?
Yeah, I do. We go to dinner and a movie sometimes or we go to the arcade and just kick it. For Christmas I bought them rubber band guns so we'll just go outside the school room for recess and shoot at fake targets on the walls. We're really good friends.

Are you and your sister on the show close off-set?
Sara's actually 19. It's really fun. She's really sweet. We hang out sometimes but me and the boys are in school together like, 3 hours a day, so we get to bond a lot more.

What's been your favorite scene to film?
Probably when Alex goes to the school dance and a boy actually wants to dance with her. Talk about awkward.

Have you had that experience?
I actually haven't been to a school dance yet but I'm really excited. I have all these dresses in my closet that I've worn to premieres that I don't really get to wear anywhere else so I'm really excited that if I go to one of these school dances, I could go to my closet and be like, "Which dress do I want to wear?!"

That's every girl's dream!
Yes, I have so many dresses. I have separate closets. One is in my room, like casual clothes and jeans, and the one in our guest bedroom is all dresses and fancy stuff.

Who do you think is the funniest cast member on the show?
You can't decide that. Everyone is hilarious. We're SNL but for ABC.

Who makes you laugh the most during scenes?
I'm mostly in scenes with Ty and Julie and Nolan. During those scenes, Ty always has these really funny punch lines or the High School Musical dance. I swear he made that up all by himself. Ever since the pilot, to this day we still do "We're All in this Together…"

How do you refrain from laughing during a funny scene?
I just think to myself, "In a couple of seconds, they will yell cut and I will burst out laughing." I just think to myself, "I am cool, I am calm, I am collected." I try to channel my inner Alex and think what she would do.

Reid Ewing (Dylan) of "Modern Family" and MTV's "The Truth Below"

Things are going great for all stars of "Modern Family".  Almost all have upcoming projects and it is really nice to see them being recognized right now as great actors.  One of the stars who have little exposure but are great too is Reid Ewing or Dylan, Haley's boyfriend as we know him.  He was recently chosen as the lead role in a project by MTV "The Truth Below".  Here is the good news from POP Watch:

Modern Family’s Reid Ewing has scored the lead role in MTV’s new project The Truth Below, a telefilm about a group of teens trapped in an avalanche. Wait, but if there is no moonlight, how will he be able to serenade his fellow teens with “Do you want to do me, do me, underneath the moonlight?” Relive the hilarious music video for “In the Moonlight (Do Me)” by “DYLAN” after the jump. Doesn’t his heart just make you want to explode in light?

Spoilers from "From Inside the Box"

Korbi Ghosh has some answers to questions posted by fans of "Modern Family" in her News From Inside the Box.  Here is the article:

"Modern Family"! It's my absolute favorite show, I look forward to it every week. Do you know anything about what's coming up? -Kate

The Valentine's Day episode airs Wednesday (Feb. 10), and Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil (Ty Burrell) will try to spice things up and get sexy. And it will be embarrassing. Like, publicly embarrassing.

I know everyone loves Cameron on "Modern Family" and I do too, but the kids also really make me laugh. They don't seem to be getting as much credit. -Callie S.

There are several solid kid-centric story lines coming up. You can look forward to Haley (Sarah Hyland) getting her driver's license soon ... maybe. She's taking the driver's test anyway. For a second time. With the same instructor who previously failed her.

"Modern Family"! "Modern Family"! You need to cover it more. -Benjamin

I agree and I will.

Any scoop on "Modern Family"? -jen

There's a trip to Maui in the fam's future. Everyone from baby Lily on up to big old Jay (Ed O'Neill) has a plane ticket booked. Only problem is little Manny (Rico Rodriguez) may or may not be on a no-fly list.

Love this show.

"Modern Family" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC

More Scoops for Upcoming Episodes

Here is Michael Ausiello from EW.com and his scoop about the next things to come on "Modern Family".  I think the racquetball game and the driving test will happen on "Moon Landing" episode.  It's the same episode where Cam and Jay will do some butt touching.  See for yourself . . .

Question: Hey, mister, got any Modern Family scoop? —Sarah P.
Ausiello: Yes, ma’am, I do. Coming soon to a TV near you…
* Luke and Ty go treasure hunting underneath the house.
* Haley takes her driving test.
* Cam challenges Jay to a game of racquetball.
* A vacation is in the works. “Our showrunners really wanna go to Hawaii,” says Eric Stonestreet (Cam). “I hear them hatching plots. And let’s face it, every great sitcom goes to Hawaii at some point.”

Scoop from the SAG Awards Night

During the SAG Awards, Watch with Kristin on E!Online got us some scoops on the next episodes of "Modern Family".  It's about a car crash, I wonder in which episode this will be.  Here they are:

Bree in Michigan: I think Modern Family should have beat Glee at the Golden Globes! Anything coming up on the funniest show around?

No comment on the Globes talk, but quite a few car troubles ahead on Modern Family! Rico Rodriguez, who plays young prodigy Manny, told us this of his TV family at the Screen Actors Guild Awards: "Mitchell, Gloria and Manny have some fun at a cupcake shop, [then] a car crash happens!" Will Sara Hyland's Haley be involved? We're thinking maybe, after she teased this: "The big question will be: Does Haley pass her driving test or does she fail her driving test? You won't find out for awhile, but it's going to be funny!"

Matt in Pennsylvania: More Modern Family, please.

Benjamin Bratt returns as Manny's wayward—and way sexy!—dad in the Feb. 10 episode. Wonder if Jay is still upset about being stood up?

Advance Review from Televisionary

Here is a review or a first look at Modern Family by Televisionary.   Catch the season's pilot episode of ABC's Modern Family tonight!

Pilot Inspektor: An Advance Review of ABC's "Modern Family"
Written by Jace on Wednesday, May 20, 2009

I have to say that ABC may have offered the most memorable upfront presentation in recent years, not because of the self-deprecation comedy stylings of Jimmy Kimmel but because they pulled off what many thought was impossible: they showed an entire pilot to advertisers and press. At the upfront itself.

Yesterday's upfront presentation, masterfully overseen by Anne Sweeney and Steve McPherson, led up to this groundbreaking moment by first showcasing the entire first act of its new drama series Flash Forward (a treat in itself) but then ABC went one step further by screening the full pilot episode of its new comedy Modern Family.

Modern Family, from creators/executive producers Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan (who most recently collaborated on FOX's short-lived comedy Back to You), tells the story of three very different families living in suburban America. Told in a mockumentary style that's clearly influenced by the work of director Christopher Guest, Modern Family seeks to shine a light on just how neurotic and idiosyncratic--and at the same time how reassuringly normal--every family is, no matter what its makeup.

This winning series follows the lives of three diverse families: there's Jay (Ed O'Neill), an older man who has taken a younger bride in Gloria (Sofía Vergara) and become a reluctant father to her idealistically romantic young son Manny (Rico Rodriguez). There's a traditional nuclear family, overseen by Phil (Ty Burrell), a dad who's far less cool than he believes himself to be, and Claire (Julie Bowen), a mom who struggles to keep her family moving in a straight line. Their kids, Haley (Sarah Hyland), Luke (Nolan Gould), and Alex (Ariel Winter) are a motley bunch, prone to getting their heads stuck in banisters and accidentally shooting one another with BB pellets. (In the pilot episode, 15-year-old daughter Haley brings home a high school senior and chaos--and painful hilarity--ensues.) Finally, there's gay couple Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and the doughy Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) who return from Vietnam with an adopted baby daughter Lily in tow.

I have to say that I was completely captivated by the pilot episode, directed by Jason Winer, which offered a nice blend of character introduction, comedic timing, and a nice twist ending that neatly ties the action together.

The cast is a real treat, with each of the actors perfectly cast in their roles. The role of Cameron could have been a stereotypical gay role but Stonestreet plays it (no pun intended) straight, offering a performance that's as naturalistic as it is nuanced, even as Cameron retains his sense of a dramatic entrance. (Cue the soundtrack to The Lion King.) The same holds for the talented Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who gives Mitchell an uptight, severe personality that's at odds with the messiness of real life he's about to encounter as a new parent; yet Ferguson's Mitchell never comes off as unlikable, despite a rant on an airplane about cream puffs. Sofia Vergara is hilarious as the sexy Gloria, who tosses off random facts about her past life and previous husband without filtering herself. Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen are welcome additions to any cast and they are well balanced as a married couple whose mission in life seems to be raising their kids so that they don't get pregnant or shoot anyone. (Seeing Burrell's solution to son Luke's inadvertent shooting of his sister is hilarious.) Additionally, it's fantastic as well to see the curmudgeonly Ed O'Neill back as a series regular; here, his gruff demeanor and caustic comments belie a, well, gruff interior as well.

Unlike NBC's Parks and Recreation, which doesn't quite know how to use the mockumentary format to its advantage, Levitan and Lloyd employ the usual tricks of the trade: hand-held cameras, talking heads, etc. but they use them significantly better here than the writer/producers of Parks and Recreation. As it's the pilot installment, the talking heads--in which the couples are paired together, talking about themselves and their families--serve to introduce the characters and explore their relationships, but the reveals are always based in humor and never feel overtly expositional. (One rather humorous example: Gloria recounts the small village that she hails from, turning to her husband to remind her how to say in English what her town was number one in. "Murders," he says succinctly. "Ah, yes, the murders," purrs Gloria, who later recounts how she and her former husband fell out of a window while making love.)

Modern Family is one part of ABC's new comedy strategy on Wednesday evenings, where it will launch a two-hour block of half-hours that also includes fellow family comedies Hank and The Middle, which separately boast Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton, both of whom worked with Levitan and Lloyd on Back to You. Despite the marquee names of Modern Family's lead-in series, I can't help but root for Modern Family after falling for this series' winning combination of biting wit, subtle humor, and heart. Ultimately, this is one family I'm more than happy to spend time with each week.

The Plot

Here is ABC's official description of the much awaited comedy series Modern Family:

"When the Pritchett, Delgado and Dunphy families agree to be interviewed by a documentary crew, they have no idea just how much they're about to reveal about themselves. Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill) met the stunning Columbian Gloria (Sofia Vergara) when she bartended in a bikini at the pool party he threw for himself the day his wife left him. Now Jay and Gloria are married and Jay tries hard to keep up with his much younger and hotter wife and her passionate teenage son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez). Claire Delgado (Julie Bowen) is having a hard time raising her own family. Her husband Phil (Ty Burrell) is great, except for the fact that he thinks he's "down" with their teenage kids, much to their embarrassment.  Mitchell Dunphy (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and his enthusiastic partner Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) have just adopted Lily, a precious little baby girl from Vietnam. This engaging new comedy offers a 'mockumentary' view into the complicated, messy, loving life of three unique families. Steven Levitan (Just Shoot Me) and Christopher Lloyd (Frasier) invite you into the sometimes warm and sometimes twisted embrace of modern day families."

Sarah Hyland, Nolan Gould and Ariel Winter also star in the single-camera project, which Jason Winer helmed from a script by Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd.
